This shows that Brutus is influential and is the only person making decisions even though the conspiracy was created by Cassius. When Cassius asks the others to take an oath, Brutus instead argues that they shouldn’t as their noble cause is enough to motivate them. He cuts Cassius short when he was trying to argue his case that they should kill Mark Antony, and being the only one to do so shows his influence over the other conspirators. “Alas, good Cassius, do not think of him” “If he loves Caesar, all that he can do is to himself, take thought, and die for Caesar”īrutus once agains underestimated Mark Antony’s ability and power, as Antony single-handedly led the people of Rome against the conspirators after Caesar’s death. This underestimation of Antony proves to be wrong and eventually resulted in anarchy in Rome after the death of Caesar because they failed to neutralise Mark Antony and instead underestimated his power. However, he fails to see that Caesar is greatly loved by the people of Rome and thus the public may see them as murderers who killed Caesar for their personal gain.īrutus is once again shown to be politically naive as he underestimates Antony and thinks that he will not be a threat once Caesar is dead and instead be useless and stand on the sidelines. Here Brutus is shown to be politically naive and to have a poor sense of judgement where he is making the assumption that the people of Rome will see them as the saviours of Rome, who rescued them from a potential dictatorship by Caesar. “Which so appearing to the common eyes, we shall be purgers, not murderers” He only wants to do this for the good of Rome and does not want to spill unnecessary blood. This reveals that Brutus is noble as he wishes to avoid being seen as a cold-hearted, bloodless murderer. “We all stand up against the spirit of Caesar, and in the spirit of men there is no blood” This shows that Brutus is honorable as he wishes to kill Caesar but not Mark Antony as he wishes to lessen the bloodshed and violence and keep it to only those who he feels pose a potential danger to Rome, thus showing that he is noble as he did not want to kill someone he feels is innocent. “Let us be sacrificers, but not butchers, Cassius” He wants to make Caesar a sacrifice, and not a cold bloodless murder thus showing that he is noble as he is only killing Caesar for the good of Rome and not for any personal gains. “Let’s carve him as a dish fit for the gods, Not hew him as a carcass fit for hounds"īrutus avoids excessive violence in his cause to righteously kill Caesar for the good of Rome and to appease the Gods. The reign of Augustus marked the end of the Roman Republic and the start of the Roman Empire.“If it be aught toward the general good, set honour in one eye and death i'th other, and I will look on both indifferently”īrutus is willing to sacrifice his own life if it is for the good of the people of Rome, thus showing that he is noble and honourable. In the end, Caesar’s grandnephew and adoptive son Octavian emerged as Rome’s leader. Much of the Roman public hated the senators for the assassination, and a series of civil wars ensued. The death of Julius Caesar ultimately had the opposite impact of what his assassins hoped. Collectively, the group stabbed Caesar a reported 23 times, killing the Roman leader. A group of as many as 60 conspirators decided to assassinate Caesar at the meeting of the Senate on March 15, the ides of March. After Caesar attained the status of dictator for life in 44 B.C.E., these officials decided to strike the ultimate blow against his power. Many members of the Senate, a group of appointed (not elected) political leaders, resented Caesar’s popularity and arrogance. ![]() Caesar was also a popular author who wrote about his travels, theories, and political views. ![]() He was a successful military leader who expanded the re public to include parts of what are now Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium.
